Kg Tanjung Tokong: "Ini Tanah Kami"

TANJUNG TOKONG: The Kampung Tanjung Tokong Residents Association (Persatuan Penduduk Kampung Tg Tokong) had a press conference on Sunday afternoon (11 Oct 2009) at a Majlis Raya; and Rosly Yusof and myself were invited to speak on behalf of Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas (JERIT, the Network of the Oppressed Peoples).

Among the issues highlighted by the residents' association was UDA Holdings' intention of evicting them without taking into consideration their livelihood and the historical importance of their village. The residents association is asking for a small part of the village to be preserved.

Rosly and I emphasized that their struggle for decent housing is shared by millions of people around the world of all nationalities. We said that they should try to build solidarity with others going through the same problems around the country regardless of race and that their struggle should be based on the human right to shelter shelter which can be elaborated by Article 25(1) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

"Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care, and necessary social services".

Their right to housing will be won by having more dialogue and interaction with their own people, careful actions and not through falling victim to nationalist or racist sentiments which can be used to manipulate them.
